The presence of pigeons in cities translates to the use of any crevasse mostly sheltered places, for the construction of their nests.
The abundance of food and the lack of natural enemies creates an increasing growth in their populations and always following the known problems they create, either with their feces or with the pathogens they carry on their bodies.
The places where they can make their nests are all the surfaces that are covered with a shelter and are not exposed to weather conditions. eg a headlamp or an inscription under a balcony, building fronts, horizontal beams of a pergola, photovoltaic panels in a tile roof, etc.
The most common and effective means for repelling and removing them is with spikes or net.
The spikes are usually 10-12 cm stainless steel (rarely plastic) projections, arranged in a long poly-carbonate or metal base. The width they cover and their density are the main elements of their differentiation.
The spikes are mainly used when we want to prevent birds from sitting on horizontal, mostly narrow surfaces.
Diseases Caused by Birds
- Cryptococcus (Cryptococcal Meningitis) Dangerous fungus that can become lethal.
- Salmonella and listeria You do not get them only from food, pigeons also carry them. And it is very dangerous for pregnant women and young children.
- Viral Encephalitis The Nile Virus. Pigeons are the main carriers of the virus and can transmit it if they are stung by a mosquito that will then sting a human. Dangerous disease which can also be fatal.
- Colobacterium (E. Coli) Usually it is transmitted from raw meat, but the pigeons also have it. Which means you have to wash your hands every time you come in contact with a pigeon(you have to wash your hands often, anyway).
- With their droppings they cause aesthetic degradation and damage to the surfaces . From discoloration of car paint to erosion and staining on marble and other surfaces.
- Pathogenic microorganisms are growing in the faeces. Contaminated droppings when dried and rubbed become dust that circulates in the air, thus transferring viruses and bacteria. They cause serious health problems such as allergies, encephalitis etc.
- By passing between vehicles they can cause accidents, especially in motorbikes.
- They spread harmful organisms.
- By settling they ¨scrape off¨ their bodies parasites, such as mites, fleas, lice, etc. and enter the homes through openings.
- Quite often such a problem occurs with the mite
Dermanyssus gallinae. It usually has a white or grayish color and becomes darker or red when fed with blood. It is smaller than the head of the pin is shown in large populations and moves relatively quickly. We can see it on all internal surfaces or objects (especially in the dark-colored) near openings that have pigeons nestled on the outside. It is responsible for stinging even in humans, and is a carrier of diseases such as salmonellosis, flu, spirocheting. To tackle the mites, the pigeons are removed and the area cleansed, spraying with a specialized biocide.
