What to do to remove Wasps

These are insects, belonging to the order of hymenoptera, 10-20 mm long. Firstly lets clarify the difference between a wasp and a bee. Wasps have a bright yellow color that alternates with brown, while the bees are hairy brownish in color. Both have a sting, but bees die most of the times after using theirs, when wasp don’t, resulting in them being more offensive in nature.

Another difference is that after a bee sting we apply ammonia, while in wasps we apply vinegar.

Wasps create societies such as ants, bees, etc., and form hives of small hexagonal cells.

Wasp nests can be made in any slit, hole or opening either in tree trunks, ground, etc. either in construction openings, window frames, ducts, awnings, a / c, etc.

With their sting, they cause pain, tingling, local swelling, and most of the times are easily treated. However, due to an allergic reaction there are cases of swelling, intense general itching (personal experience), vomiting dizziness, blood pressure which may lead even to death.

The European hornet, 25-35 mm (Vespacrabro), has similar habits to the wasp, and is brown with yellow ribbons. They are quite aggressive if they are bothered and their sting is very painfull.

They form societies and make their nests in amazing places in cities, where their presence is dangerous.

A picture 1 shows a damaged nest in the background, while in front of it lay dead wasps. It is in an unusable attic in a house in Kifissia, where they were coming through undisturbed by the ornamental openings.

CONTROL:

PREVENTIVE MEASURES:

closing or placing a mesh in openings such as: vent hoods, loft windows, a / c pipe outlet etc.

ACTIVE MEASURES:

Locating and destroying their nests, if possible, by qualified personnel using appropriate methods.
When the nest are not in our area and are not detectable then traps with suitable attractives are used.
